Map of Palmyre (M. Balty & P. Clauss-Balty)

The most ambitious program is the archaeological atlas of Palmyra, an international project involving Syria, France, Germany, Poland, and Japan.

Significant work has been carried out in recent years on gathering information and documents, field surveying and description (P. Clauss-Balty and C. Delplace), topography (K. Schnädelbach), cartography (Th. Fournet and K. Schnädelbach), as well as writing and formatting (M. Hammad).

The publication of the old French excavations

The second program of our operations is the publication of old French excavations that have remained unpublished. The first volume, published in 2005, concerns the Palmyra agora complex, excavated under the direction of H. Seyrig in 1939 and 1940, with the assistance of architect R. Duru. The second volume, currently being prepared under the direction of C. Delplace and J. Dentzer-Feydy, will concern the house known as “Achilles and Cassiopeia,” a large domestic complex located east of the Bel sanctuary, which was also excavated in the early 1940s under the direction of H. Seyrig. To publish this old French excavation, which remained unpublished except for the mosaics studied by H. Stern, architect P. Piraud-Fournet (IFPO) was brought in to study the architecture and internal hydraulic arrangements (basin, latrines), and J. Balty will revisit the mosaic records in the light of recent discoveries and studies.
