Archéologue, spécialiste de la protohistoire de l’Arabie et céramologue, les recherches de Sophie Méry suivent deux voies complémentaires. Son premier axe est généraliste, avec l’encadrement de missions archéologiques et la direction de fouilles en Arabie orientale, à l’entrée du Golfe persique, où ses thématiques sont centrées sur l’organisation des sociétés au Néolithique et à l’âge du Bronze. Son second axe est plus spécialisé, avec des recherches à long terme sur les céramiques protohistoriques d’Arabie et du Moyen-Orient (analyse morphofonctionnelle, archéométrie, technologie).

Sophie Méry a intégré le CNRS comme chargée de recherche en 1992, après un doctorat en archéologie orientale à l’université Paris I soutenu en 1991. Elle est directrice de recherche au CNRS depuis 2010. Elle a dirigé la Mission archéologique française à Abou Dhabi entre 1995 et 1999, puis la Mission archéologique française aux Émirats arabes unis. Elle a fouillé plusieurs sites néolithiques et âge du bronze aux Émirats arabes unis et au sultanat d’Oman, et participé à des fouilles en Iraq et au Pakistan.

Sophie Méry a notamment publié en 2000 chez CNRS Éditions un ouvrage intitulé Les céramiques d’Oman et l’Asie moyenne. Une archéologie des échanges à l’Age du Bronze

Recherches sur les 5 dernières années
  • Cadre : La contribution à la recherche de S. Méry a consisté en la production de données primaires sur le Néolithique, les âges du Bronze et, dans une moindre mesure, sur l’âge du Fer en Arabie orientale et à leur analyse (prospections, fouilles, stratigraphie et/ou étude de la culture matérielle) combinées à l’exploration des transformations culturelles, et incluant les résultats de l’étude des stratégies d’exploitation des milieux côtiers, marins et terrestres. Sa contribution a été méthodologique (étude des amas coquilliers, céramologie) et théorique (spécialisation artisanale, mobilité). L’apport de ses collaborateurs, axé sur des travaux transversaux et transdisciplinaires, a été fondamental pour explorer des questions dont la complexité est telle qu’elle requiert la mise au point d’une planification stratégique.
  • Fouilles et prospections en Arabie orientale : le Néolithique : Les travaux de S. Méry et ceux de la Mission archéologique française aux E.A.U. se sont concentrés sur le Néolithique à Umm al-Quwain. 17 sites néolithiques ont été découverts en prospection. Des fouilles ont été faites sur 3 sites : UAQ2, UAQ36 et UAQ38, documentant le Néolithique sur 1500 ans, soit la seconde moitié du VIème Millénaire (une période (inconnue dans la région il y a encore 10 ans) à la seconde moitié du 2e moitié du Vème Millénaire (une période assez peu documentée encore). Ces sites de pêcheurs-éleveurs (d’ovi-caprinés principalement) s’implantaient au sommet de mégadunes, au bord de mangroves et de lagunes, avec des zones ciblées de ramassage de coquilles marines et de capture de crabes. Les zones de pêche se trouvaient dans la lagune ou en haute mer. Le milieu naturel était optimisé mais a évolué dans le temps, en lien avec le forçage climatique et environnemental.
  • Études céramologiques : l’ âge du Bronze. Elle a également poursuivi lors du dernier quinquennal ses études de poterie, qui visent à distinguer celles typiques de l’Oman de celles qui viennent de la vallée de l’Indus, mais aussi celles qui présentent des traits hybrides (à Hili, Salut, Bat et al Tikah). Elle a pu faire l’hypothèse, forte, que des potiers venus de l’Indus et possiblement, du Gujairat, s’étaient établis dans les oasis de l’Oman intérieur, et y avaient fait souche.
