Vincent Charpentier a travaillé en France, dans l’Arctique nord-américain (Nunavut, NWT), en Irak, en Oman et dans les Émirats Arabes Unis. Spécialiste de la Préhistoire récente de l’Arabie, il entreprend depuis 1985 des recherches dans le Sultanat d’Oman et est actuellement directeur de la mission archéologique française “Ja’alan-Dhofar” du MEAE. Cette mission oeuvre le long des 1000 km des rivages omanais de la Mer d’Arabie et, depuis 2018, dans le désert du Rub al Khali. Il est également, depuis 2001, chef de service à l’Institut national français de recherches archéologiques préventives, ainsi que, depuis 1987, producteur d’une émission hedomadaire à France Culture (Radio France).

Travaux de terrain
  • Chef de la mission archéologique française du Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères (MEAE), au Sultanat d’Oman, « les rivages de la Mer Arabie entre 10000 et 2000 ans avant notre ère », Ja’alan-Dhofar. Créée en 2010 par la commission des fouilles du MAEE, la mission a pour objectif d’étudier l’évolution globale des rivages de la mer d’Arabie, des sociétés prédatrices à l’émergence de premières sociétés complexes. Le terrain s’étend de l’extrémité orientale de l’Arabie, de Sur et du Ra’s al-Hadd, jusqu’aux rives du Dhofar, et couvre une distance de 1500 km, îles comprises.
  • Programme franco-omanais, désert du Rub al Khali (Ramlat Jadeelah), ce programme interdisciplinaire (Géologie, hydrologie, archéologie et paléontologie) a été engagé en 2018. Il a pour objectif l’étude des sites du Rub al Khali omanais, notamment ceux couvrant les périodes Paléolithique et Néolithique.
