Bosra
Starting in 1981, the French archaeological mission in southern Syria participated in the exploration of ancient Bosra. The research focused on understanding urban planning, through city-wide surveys, as well as particular monuments, and several archaeological excavations were carried out, allowing for the establishment of a detailed chronology of observed phenomena, especially for the Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad periods. It also resulted in a new understanding of urban organization and its development from the Bronze Age to the modern period, with a better knowledge of artisanal productions as well as consumed natural resources. This research was conducted in close cooperation with the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums of Syria and the French Institute of the Near East, with the support of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
The mission relies on the ‘Archaeology of the Hellenistic and Roman Near East’ team, part of the ‘Archaeology and Sciences of Antiquity’ laboratory (UMR7041 Nanterre).
